There are few natural woods where I feel intimidated, but this was one of them. I parked on a dark lane even though sunshine was above and beyond. This place existed in a cocoon. There was no one about, no cars to be heard, just the setting sun and the sharp call of a pheasant. In the distance I heard gunshot, snapping me back to modern day but the wood really held me. I kept looking over my shoulder and checking out the dark corners but couldn't see anyone or anything. I'm not even spooked by horror films these days but I genuinely felt weird in this small but surreal looking woodland, stunted trees, strange shapes and contrasting flat areas of dead leaves. I was glad to get back to the van, it's red tail lights left on to guide me back!
