The Drum House and the Broken Fence, Blaenau

What started as a heavy, cloudy, dreary morning in the hills above Blaenau Ffestiniog eventually turned into a beautiful and dramatic day.

It was a strange place, littered with industrial remnants and man made tracks, rail lines, ditches, water channels, fences and buildings, stretching from the tiny top quarries right down to the huge sprawling scar of Llechwedd. Nevertheless, it felt like wild landscape, grasses and vegetation were reclaiming and softening acres of once quarried land - birds floated around on two large lakes and a brilliant low sunshine back-lit rugged natural mountains beyond. Indeed the whole place is surrounded by beautiful, lonely wild hills and the place was deserted, not even signs of other peoples footprints, and then suddenly, on rounding a bend of an old railway line, I came across two BT workers trying to repair vandalised phone cables which ran to one of the last remaining working quarries.

I ended up looking down over the vast industrialised sprawl of this area's largest quarry and all I could hear was sheep, no cars, no planes, no voices, no mechanisation. It was like walking through an historical photo with sound effects. A place I would love to visit many times more.

Today I sold the first of the five edition A2 prints, to Mr & Mrs Roddy of Conwy. No 2 is now available HERE
